WEEK 9

On this week, I and Justin (design leader) discussed about the landscape alteration. We decided to make a challenging landscape. A landscape that looks natural on its own way rather than rigid. Our ambitious is to attempt to realistically mimic a natural site as much as possible.

At this point, we decided to move the house from Pokolbin to The terrace. It’s not exactly the terrace, but the aim is to construct a cliff by the ocean. Justin as a design leader gave some inspiration aspects to consider for a more rea

listic site.

The task:

-Manually made Rocks

- House stan

ds alone in a natural landscape.

-Rocky cliff

-Artlantis Water shader.

-Artlantis Trees, plants and trees.

-Brick drive way to house.

The terrace top view :

Some inspiration towards the landscape

This is Justin’s previously work. He showed me some ideas what to do.

The natural rocks:

The cliff example: the cliff would look something like this artificial climbing wall. The cliff and its irregularity

WEEK 10

On this week, I created basic landscape of new location for building. (Mesh, contour, AHD)

I started by this illustration which Justin guide me throughout the landscape progress.

Basically, there are 4 layers.
1. Mesh 1 (Layer of the grass)
2. Mesh 2 (Layer of the cliff)
3. Mesh 3 (Layer of the water)
4. Mesh 4 (Layer of the land)

On the progression, they are many experiments, trial and errors to get this one right. There was a possibility that I may not be able to form, but at least it nearly to there.

This picture below (progress 1)

MESH2- the Cliff progress on week 10

I constructed the elevation on plan by forming a nature and irregular characteristic of cliff. I used GDL script and rotate it become plan. In this stage, I have a problem when I rotate, the plan wasn’t change.

Next task: Find the solution how to rotate the 2dscript.

MESH 3 - the sea and MESH 4 (land below sea level)

I constructed sea and land below sea level

At this week, I just left MESH 1 (layer of the grass)

I planned to put another layer on top of cliff and create a pathway to the building.

This seems almost what I wanted, but I need to work on the natural complex landscape. The next stage is to make the cliff smoother and add boulders, stone and trees.

NEXT TASK for WEEK 11

-To create more detailed landscape of new location for building. (Trees, gardens, natural landscape forms - blending grass, cliff, rocks, sand, ocean, horizon and sky naturally)

WEEK 11

All the group members attempt to finish modeling stuff before week 13.

As the landscape leader, the task of this week:

  • · The cliff that I have done – need to be smoother for the perfection
  • · Create big rocks and boulders
  • · Make the MESH 1 (Layer of the grass) with the pathway
  • · Set the materials that to be used

1.The cliff that I have done – need to be smoother for the perfection

Well, Justin helped me on this. He showed me the way to make it smooth.

So, from the initial cliff turned to be:

From this, I allocate the house to the position that we want.

2.Create big rocks and boulders

After that, I and Justin decided to make apostles around the sea. The inspiration we got from the twelve apostles, the bondi beach, etc

The landscape is going to be the mixture of twelve apostle ideas and the boulders in Bondi beach.

At this stage, it is quite challenging to me to play around with the mesh tool and GDL script. Besides, I created the bog rock and form it. I tried to stick it and reform in different scale. I created a lot of layer and stepped them, tried and see the result until I satisfied with the nature result. And here we are, the result:

At this stage as well, we found the solution of the 2D GDL script. And the result :

3. Make the MESH 1 (Layer of the grass) with the pathway

I created new mesh for the grass and arranged the position because the grass does not cover the entire top cliff. Some of it are soil and the rest are grass. After arrange the position, I set the contour thickness to make it bouncing. And I made the pathway by cutting off the grass layer. At this stage, some failure was occurred on this stage due to the grass layer is not flat. But ended up, it looks good.

4.Set the materials that to be used

I used limestone rough for the cliff, and the big rocks set the shiny. This was not finalized yet, I need to work on the texture from Artlantis. Next task: Texturize (was helped by Lim Chze Yoon)

NEXT TASK FOR WEEK 12

-To finish all landscaping. (Detailed - with accurate "feel" - of trees, gardens, natural landscape forms - blending grass, cliff, rocks, sand, ocean, horizon and sky naturally)

-Helping Lim Chze Yoon in preparing design for analogue presentation.

Week 12

Basically, it is almost done. On this week, I need to work on the finishing which is the trees, gardens, and some touching up on the texture. The texture will be done by Lim Chze Yoon as the helper. All of these were being touched in Artlantis program.

These are the final result:

Zoom in to the house environment

Finish!

SELF-REFLEXTION

I have found that working with a group of members makes things easier because everybody does contribute and do their task consistently under the management leader order. I am satisfied with the time management that all of us had done before we started the project. Being a landscape leader, I had to come out with ideas, find the inspiration, collaborate with design leader, designing the landscape to achieve high quality work. Besides that, I had to pass the information and details regarding the landscape to the presentation artist.

Coming out to real industry to the practice, the skills that I have been learned through this assignment would be much help. The most things that I learned are the group communication within each member. Without communication and responsible consistency of each member, this group work would not be happen. However, I notice every group work always need a person to be the head. A leader manages the time constraint and a leader that decide the final decision so that it prevents misleading and miscommunication. To be a landscape leader, I learnt the way to communicate with the design leader on when I need to be guided and when I need to make a decision. Regarding the modeling, I learnt new skills from other group members. Collaboration within each member is highly visible in this group, we helped each other to solve problem, and at the same time we learnt new things.

This group has really been excited to work with and they have been responsible and roll on their task with the time management. Besides, they do not just do good, but they do better and have high expectation. They have made the time constraint easier for me by following the schedule. It’s exciting to work with such responsible members and high ability and high expectation group members

Creative leader of the Architectural architects

Chze Yoon's original house model
Transformation of the former model to the new one.
My role as the creative leader is to decide any general aesthetic improvements and additions to the project. Sometimes, the creation of an intriguingly delightful model would be that of a complex task. Especially, in terms of my desires because my interpretation of an aesthetic design would be one that considers the site apart of its architecture. The site which is an element of nature is one that is hardly taken much priority in computer aided modeling for architecture.

I had intended for a beautiful building to relate to a  magnificent site, to express a spiritual and sensual experience in the model. In which with the power of CAD, designers could to do almost anything in the unreality, from flying slabs and to place a form in any context. However, CAD is often criticized for it disability for expressing character and human personality. Producing repetitive and formatted forms. Perhaps why some architects still prefer to communicate via hand drawings. To me this group project is not just in means of doing what is required and getting the job done. But more to lead the group in a curios exploration in to the capabilities of CAD.

Besides that, my responsibilities are also to guide the creative team throughout the process of enhancing the model. I have created a number of difficult problems and obstacles that they had faced. Sometimes, one can find that they can't accurately convey a particular a design in CAD because their idea may be too complex to model, eventually abandoning their idea and proceeding with their dreams unfulfilled. However, if one has the enthusiasm there is bound to be a way. Therefore, I have been constantly with the team, one on one, in experimenting and coming up with solutions. Also by the taking advantage of this blog, I too have communicated my ideas by posting them here.

Structure
I am also partially in charge of structural additions in this project. Renovating the building but still keeping the general form and concept of the original building. During the early stages of the model making process, I have modified the interior walls for the upper story.

And the above image shows the other structural additions we made in the later stages. Modifications by me in blue and red by Rachel.

Landscape
from Pokolbin to The Terrace, Can Lis and the 12 Apostles
The original house by Chze Yoon had been located at Pokolbin. However I wanted the to challenge the the landscape architect with a more dramatic site. A cliff by the ocean. Citra had created a gargantuan site of the sea, cliffs and the fields. Later on during the modeling process we felt that the ocean was quite empty and we were itching on having some additions. Hence, inspired by the 12 Apostles in Victoria, we experimented on creating sea stacks which finalized the site.

The cliff was made first. It was first made vertically, using the mesh tool. Then via GDL scripting, we rotated the entire mesh.
Then, Citra created the rest of the landscape. The landscape consists of 5layers of mesh as shown in the image above.

Interior

As for the interiors, I wanted the interior designer to sway away from the already formulated default objects of the Archicad library. To be creative and creating custom interiors to relate to both building and site.
Also considering now that the building is by the ocean, how can the furniture and interiors live up to the textile experience of its region?

I had given Tina, the interior designer some of my sketches to give a brief idea of how I wanted the interiors to be portrayed. Bath, sink, shower, Fire place, stairs.

An example of textile furniture in our model. The model now shows some vernacular characteristics with its rock table. It matches the rocks outside the house.
One of the challenges for the interior designer was the fire place. As the fire place is unique and composite, Together me and Tina had experimented on making this fireplace via complex profiles.

Presentation
Chze Yoon, the presentation artist of project, controls the weather, climate and also perhaps the location of the model. I have emphasized that the rendering should be realistic and down to earth. At the same time, she should be hesitate to use dramatic(on earth) backgrounds such as auroras or sun sets. I wanted her to use the renderings to express a variation of emotion that the model can be a subject of.

I had also assisted chze yoon with some of the photo editing. We resourced stock images from Corbis. Then, I showed her how to edit subjects to make them appear more realistic. For example, sometimes, stock images have subjects that have lighting from unpredictable directions. We use the dodge tool and burn tool to re-adjust the subjects lighting.

Other information regarding the Landscape, Interiors and Presentation, I had posted in the previous entries.

Also, wrapping up my role as the creative leader, I had too designed the blog header.

Self Reflection

I think I had been a valuable member of the group because have lead the creative team into many interesting challenges. With the existence of these challenges, I had always been there to assist them of any problems that they may encounter. I think the group would have learned a lot about CAD through this project. Perhaps also influencing them to self learn and explore deeper into the more complex capabilities of CAD.

Working in a group had been definitely more effective than being alone. To be able to complete a large amount of work by the distributing the task amongst group members had saved much time and effort. Especially with our model. It is quite complex. I have also learned so much from the other group members. As, i was able to learn some of the things that they discovered in CAD, like the clever ways some tools can be used that was never obvious to me at first. Branching out and discovering things on our own and then reforming to share ideas and discoveries would be a more progressive and efficient way of learning.

In the real world professional architectural practice, buildings are much bigger and complex. It would be absolutely ludicrous for a single architect to draft out an entire mega structure. Collaborations are necessary. In my case, I am very much worthy in undertaking design responsibilities in this field. I am a very good self learner, enthusiastic and always passionately exploring and experimenting CAD, photoshop and other things. As I have initially self explored complex profiles and complex meshes. Being in a collaborative group, one has to be independent and live up to their responsibilities, problems that one encounters would usually have to be independently sorted out because everyone else too have their own problems. One too has to be cooperative and have a listening ear weather it is to leaders or followers.

Individual Assessment (15%)

Below are the roles that have assigned to me at the beginning of this project.

Chze Yoon, Lim
Presentation Artist (Leader)

1. To work on 3D renderings and 3d editing.
-Photoshop editing 3D renderings for more realistic appearance
-3D rendering from ArchiCAD model (Choosing views to render)

2. To work on 2D drawings from ArchiCAD
-Gathering 2D drawings from ArchiCAD
-Working on layout and design of Analogue Presentation

3. Co-operating with Interior Designer and Landscape Architect
-In regards with lighting, material attributes, sun, landscape and site

4. Transferring from ArchiCAD to Artlantis
-Camera angles, focus, camera settings
-Enhancing aestatics and materials with Artlantis

First of all, I am glad that my design has chosen to be the group project in this assignment. As the designer of this house, I had all my drawings and 3D model to my other group members and present to them the overall idea and layout of this house. During amendment for the house, I was there in every meeting to answer the doubts about my ArchiCAD model.

As a leader of presentation artist, my responsibility is to produce A1 presentation boards and 10 rendered images. While my other team members were working on the ArchiCAD modeling, I start doing research on the colour scheme and analogue layout that I have to produce later. Surf online to look on other’s idea in doing presentation board layout, get some inspiration from here and there. Besides that, an experimental Artlantis rendering was going on at the same time.

I have tested on various textures for the landscape and the building itself to achieve the best photo realistic quality. Above are some experienced images throughout the process.

Once ArchiCAD model is ready, I imported ArchiCAD file into Artlantis starts rendering part. I apply all the textures that I have tried on during the experimentation. Simultaneity, I enhanced the landscape by adding in more trees.

During the rendering process, I try out with the different sun angle, sky colour and light group. By adjusting these, a variety feeling of environment can be created.

After finishing the rendering part, I moved on to photo editing. With the high quality of photo realistic images, minimal editing that I have to complete in Photoshop. All I have to do is to add in human scale and adjust some of the contrast.

Next is analogue presentation. Since trees are all added in Artlantis instead of ArchiCAD, so in ArchiCAD 2D drawings, human scale and symbol of trees have to add in manually. Besides that, I add in dimensions, section cut line, trim on unnecessary line and so forth to make the 2D drawing more presentable and more toward professional drafting standard.

After all, drawings are ready to be layout in Photoshop for analogue presentation board.

Here they are the attribution of mine to our group assignment. I have found out that working in an organised group is definitely more efficient than working individually. With the coordination of every team members, we are assigned to different tasks and work dependently on each other finally come out with this amazing house design modelling. After modelling the design, it is very important for a presentation artist to produce a set of high quality images and analogue. These outcomes are to determine the whole design is well communicate to the client. Client can visualise our design idea by browsing them.

From this assignment, I have gained more knowledge about BIM, 2D and 3D drawing and the most important part is how to communicate with others and working as a team. It’s really great to work with such responsible and high ability group members.
